(8/25/08) Week 1 Notes:
Dewey Meets Turing: Interesting article that explores both sides of the digital library issue from the computer scientists and Librarians sides. I really don't agree with either side, but I can see where they are both coming from.
Is It Digital or is it a Library: Librarians have a broader view of the D-library while computer programmers see it as a database. Digital libraries can be seen as content, collections and communities. A DL is constructed for a community of users to use. Lot of problems with the global library because of the lines crossed.
Setting the Foundations of Digital Libraries:
Different disciplines define Digital Libraries in different ways:
- The DELOS Network of Excellence sees the DL as a tool to allow access to infinite knowledge.
- The concept of DL libraries has shifted from a content-centric to a person-centric system.
- A DL can be digital object and metadata repositories, reference-linking systems, archives, content administration systems (mainly developed by industry), and complex systems that integrate advanced digital library services (mainly developed in research environments). This helps cloud the meaning of what a DL is and what one is to expect from it.
Digital Library (DL): Collects, manages, and preserves long term digital content and offers updated content, with a strict functionality and quality policy

Basically follows how libraries have evolved over the years and how the digital library is the next logical step.
Discussion Question: More explanation on what Concrete Architecture is.

I'm not entirely sure (it seems like nobody is), but I believe what happened is this: since there is no class next Monday, for Labor Day, next week's schedule goes from M T W H F to T W H F. Since the University, in its infinite wisdom, also wants to have a "Fall Break" of a single day, on Monday, Oct 13, they decided to cut out our Tuesday classes that week. That week, instead of M T W H F, our schedule is M W H F. (How awkward for the undergraduates!)
At least, this is how I understand it.

Thanks for clearing that up! We have a Fall break now? Okay... But it's one day...how much you want to bet Oct. 13th is Homecoming? Oh well. Hopefully we'll figure it out in time. But I agree, the undergrads are SO not going to get this.
